Santos, Brazil

Friday Feb 22. Santos, Brazil
Welcome to Santos - the port for Brazil. Seventy percent of all imports come into here and 70 percent of all exports leave from here. It is a massive port city. And for the most part it is boring. The main things to see here according to the ship’s tours are the Coffee Museum, the Pele Museum and um, a view of Gonzaga beach and Brazil’s largest soccer stadium.
I’m looking at the tourist map they handed us as we got off the ship. Wonderful stuff here: the Restaurant school, the Andradas Pantheon with the remains of Jose Bonifacio and his brothers. A chapel where slaves took refuge. Satumino de Brito Palace housing the sanitation (sic). The photos enticing us into town show a park/beach, the custom house, the house with tiled facada, and a fishing deck.
But the ship offers a shuttle bus into a local shopping mall - a big one typical of what you see at home. But there’s also a large supermarket to buy goodies that are really expensive on board ship. Sodas at about 70 cents instead of $2.25 + 15% service on the ship. Snacks - chips, chocolate, etc at comparable savings. And I really like to browse foreign supermarkets to see how the locals live. (You can buy a 50” tv in this one for about $1800CDN.) And other appliances and clothes etc.
A few photos taken with my phone on the way in this morning. A few of a statue at the mall. A few from the bus. A rather meagre offering - sorry.
